WORKSHOP #2
Discover cleaning opportunities that perfectly suit your lifestyle and schedule. Whether you're seeking flexible hours for family, a second income, or a fresh start in a reliable industry.
There are many different areas of the Cleaning Industry in which you can work, either as an employee, a sub-contractor or as a self-employed person.
Private houses, independent living, and serviced apartments.
Offices, schools, shopping centres, and new buildings.
Laboratories, hospitals, aged care facilities, and aircraft.
Hotels, motels, and luxury vacation resorts.
You can also advertise yourself on community noticeboards and in community newspapers. Usually, these jobs will be close to where you live. Don’t put your hourly rate or the number of hours the job will take on the advertisement; you can negotiate this with the new client when they call you.
Attention to Detail, quality work - casual or regular work wanted.
Police Clearance and excellent references.
Please call XXXXXX on XXXXXXX
As previously mentioned, registering with a reputable employment agency is a great way to start cleaning houses in your area. You are working under the agency’s “banner” but you are responsible for declaring your own income for taxation purposes, so you are not an ‘employee,’ as such.
Office cleaning is not unlike house cleaning, except you have to clean all the bathrooms (including urinals) and restock supplies from the store room. Commercial locations usually supply paper towels, toilet rolls, hand soap, and bin liners. If you purchase any yourself, remember to charge it on your invoice.
You may have to remember security codes, if the building has an alarm. Don’t forget to “arm” the alarm when you leave! Most residential apartment blocks have coded cards you hold up against a sensor to open main doors and activate the lift.
Office kitchens are usually clutter-free. It is mainly wiping tables, mopping floors, and emptying bins. You will have to re-line bins around the building and dispose of them in the correct dustbins outside. Empty boxes may need flattening for the recycle bin.

Positive attitude and willingness to learn
A current State Police Clearance Certificate
A car or access to public transport
Mobile phone for client contacts and addresses
A basic cleaning kit (from Workshop #1)
A student diary or digital calendar
Cash Receipt Book & Motor Vehicle log book
Box to organize your business receipts
The point of making a profit out of providing a service, is to keep the cost of doing it right down.
You are starting a new business, but don’t feel you have to go out and buy a lot of expensive cleaning equipment and products; you won’t use half of these and very often you will have the basics at home. Washing up cleaner is a fantastic shower cleaner with a sponge with one rough side, for example.
Many householders and businesses will have cleaning equipment and products on site you can use. Also, often they do not mind if you wish to keep some of your own bulkier items on site.
"Never think it's only cleaning, because you never know what a job may lead to, if you take care over the little things."
Answer your mobile or record a professional message. Avoid negotiating rates or tasks while actively cleaning.
Look neat and tidy, tie long hair back, and avoid heavy perfumes. Never smoke in the car on the way to a job.
Let people know if you are running late. Being accommodating and courteous builds flexible, trusting relationships.
Bring your own refreshments. Keep driveways clear, and ensure all windows and doors are securely locked when leaving.
